A leak does not identify the failed part
For espresso escaping around the BES870 portafilter edge, Breville lists incorrect insertion, grounds on the basket rim, too much coffee and a silicone seal needing replacement. The symptom alone does not prove the seal is worn. Check the documented setup conditions before treating a replacement as the answer.
Compatibility ledger
MODEL-SPECIFIC| Item or model | Fits | Verdict | Research note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Breville SP0025526 | BES870 in the official Works With list | Fits | The official name is Seal Shower Head 54mm. Listed compatibility is not a diagnosis or a promise that it fixes your leak. |
| Generic gasket advertised as 54 mm | Exact product and machine combination unresolved | Verify model | A diameter in a title does not establish equivalent fit, material or performance. |
| A complete replacement portafilter | Need for replacement not established by this symptom | Verify model | Do not buy a new handle merely because coffee escapes near it. |
First identify where the liquid is coming from
This guide addresses coffee escaping at the portafilter-to-group-head junction during extraction. A puddle under the appliance, a tank leak or liquid from a spout is a different observation. Record the location and timing before choosing a troubleshooting entry. If the source is unclear, stop using the machine and ask Breville for assistance rather than opening the housing or running repeated shots to guess.
Three setup checks before shopping
Page 28 of the US manual says to fully insert and rotate the portafilter until resistance is felt, remove grounds from the basket rim, and reduce an excessive dose, trimming after tamping. These are separate checks, not evidence that all three are wrong on your machine. Do not remove the portafilter during extraction. For cleaning or maintenance, switch off, unplug and allow the machine to cool; follow the manual's safety instructions.
What the seal listing does—and does not—prove
Breville's US SP0025526 page identifies Seal Shower Head 54mm and explicitly includes BES870 in its expanded Works With list. That is the official part record to compare with a selected offer. It does not certify an aftermarket item that copies the code, and it does not show that your installed seal is damaged. Keep those questions separate: ‘does this part fit?’ and ‘is this the part I need?’
If the basic checks do not resolve it
Breville covers seal replacement under Using the Allen Key on page 26 and directs owners to its support team for seals or advice. Read that complete procedure before deciding whether to perform it. This page deliberately does not reproduce a repair procedure or recommend opening the machine. If you are unsure, a screw will not release, or the leak persists, stop and contact support. Avoid improvising tools or compensating for uncertainty with extra force.
If the leak began after an accessory change
Tell support which portafilter, basket or seal was changed and provide its exact identifier. ‘Fits Breville’ on a marketplace title is too broad to resolve a changed combination. Keep the original component details and the replacement packaging together. Our linked portafilter guide helps with identification; it is not evidence that changing back or buying another component will cure the fault.
Use the purchase link only when a part is actually needed
The Amazon search below is for BES870 group-head seals. Results can contain other models and third-party products. Check the selected variant, seller's model statement and package contents against the official record; do not rely on shape, star ratings or a copied part number. If the problem is resolved without replacement, there is no purchase to make. No particular marketplace item is certified here.
Evidence and limits
Sources were checked October 2, 2026. This guide covers US BES870 documentation, not every machine called Barista Express or Sage. It is documentary research, not a hands-on repair, physical fit test or individualized fault diagnosis. The explanatory image shows a decision sequence, not a product cross-section. We make no price, availability, lifespan or guaranteed-repair claims.
